Στα χέρια του Ύπατου εκπρόσωπου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης για θέματα εξωτερικής πολιτικής Ζοζέπ Μπορέλ βρίσκεται η κοινή επιστολή των έξι Κύπριων ευρωβουλευτών, που ζητούν την άμεση απελευθέρωση του Ελληνοκύπριου ακτιβιστή Αντρέα Σουτζιή που κρατείται παράνομα από το κατοχικό καθεστως, με την κατηγορία της κατασκοπείας.
Όπως αναφέρεται στην επιστολή, τα έγγραφα που βρέθηκαν στην κατοχή του ακτιβιστή δεν έχουν να κάνουν με στρατιωτικές εγκαταστάσεις, ενώ γίνεται λόγος για κωλυσιεργία από τις κατοχικές αρχές.
Ζητείται την ίδια ώρα η παρέμβαση Μπορέλ για αποφυλάκιση του Ανδρέα Σουτζιή και επισημαίνεται ότι η κράτησή του "δυναμιτίζει" το κλίμα μεταξύ των δύο πλευρών.
Η επιστολή παραδόθηκε διά χειρός στην αίθουσα της Ολομέλειας, με τον κ. Μπορέλ να αναφέρει ότι θα λάβει υπ' όψιν το αίτημα.Την επιστολή παρέδωσε εκ μέρους των Κύπριων ευρωβουλευτών, ο Κώστας Μαυρίδης.

Dear Mr Borrell,
Mr. Andreas Soutzis was arrested at the Pergamos crossing point in the Famagusta area on August 30.
The evidence used against him by the occupying “authorities” is a wireless (walkie talkie) found in his hotel, a map with some places marked and photographs.
The great majority of these documents have nothing to do with military sights. Two photos were found of a military area from an event in which Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots walked together from Deryneia to Famagusta. Mr. Soutzis explanations are that he and his friends went with two vehicles to the occupied territories and used the wireless (walkie talkie) to communicate, not knowing that this is prohibited in the occupied north. They used this system because the Greek Cypriot telephone network does not work in that part of the island. The points on the map are for a book that a friend of his is writing and he took the pictures for that purpose.
The “authorities” that report directly to the occupying Turkish forces are delaying the whole procedure, thus an issue that could have been over in a few hours is still going on.
We would like to stress that his arrestment and continued detention dynamites the climate between the two communities at a time when maximum cooperation between them should be attempted.
We would like to kindly ask for your intervention in order to have Mr Soutzis released as soon as possible.
